Applications Market The Austrian bearing manufacturer will present its latest technologies for railway traction motors and gearboxes at Messe Berlin, from September 22 to 25. Fersa, the Austrian bearing specialist for wind energy, industrial and railway applications, will take part in InnoTrans 2026, the leading international trade fair for transport technology, to be held at Messe Berlin from September 22-25. During the event, the company will present its latest bearing solutions for railway drivetrains, with a particular focus on traction motors and traction gearboxes.
These applications place high demands on bearing performance, requiring solutions capable of withstanding high rotational speeds, shock and vibration loads, temperature variations and, increasingly, the effects of electrical currents generated. With more than two decades of experience in railway applications and over 50,000 bearings delivered for rail vehicles since 2005, Fersa has built a specialised portfolio for some of the most demanding positions within railway drivetrains. Its presence at InnoTrans will reinforce the company’s role as a technical partner for railway OEMs, operators and maintenance specialists.
Technologies for traction motors One of the main areas of focus at InnoTrans will be Fersa’s range of bearing solutions for traction motors. Modern electric traction systems are exposed to current-induced damage, which can lead to micro-pitting, raceway fluting and premature lubricant degradation. To address this challenge, the company will showcase its SQ77 electrically insulated bearings, featuring a high-performance oxide ceramic coating.
These bearings provide protection against harmful bearing currents while retaining the same dimensions and technical properties as standard types, allowing them to be used as direct replacement solutions without redesigning the application. Fersa will also present its hybrid bearing range, which uses silicon nitride ceramic rolling elements. These bearings offer high electrical resistance, lower friction, reduced heat generation and improved wear resistance, helping extend bearing and lubricant service life in demanding traction motor applications.
Bearing solutions for traction gearboxes Fersa will also highlight its expertise in railway traction gearbox applications. These systems operate under some of the toughest conditions in industrial drivetrain technology, including high torque transmission, frequent acceleration and braking cycles, shock loads and limited installation space. The company supplies bearing solutions for all positions within the traction gearbox, with particular expertise in heavily loaded positions such as the input and output shafts.
Its special tapered roller bearings can be developed to customer specification, with tighter tolerance ranges and enhanced thermal stability where required. Engineering support for railway customers Beyond its product portfolio, Fersa will use InnoTrans to present its application engineering capabilities for railway customers. The company works closely with OEMs and operators throughout the project lifecycle, supporting bearing selection, calculation, load and lifetime analysis, qualification and homologation processes, as well as technical training.
InnoTrans will offer visitors the opportunity to meet the Fersa railway engineering team and discuss bearing challenges linked to traction motors, gearboxes and other demanding rail applications. Fersa will exhibit at InnoTrans 2026 at Hall 8.2, Stand 230, from September 22-25.
