Bearing Steel Metallurgy: GCr15, 440C and 17-4PH Compared -K

Choosing the Right Bearing Steel

The material sets the ceiling for a bearing's hardness, corrosion resistance and cost. Understanding the common grades helps specify the right part instead of over- or under-buying.

Through-Hardened Chromium Steel (GCr15 / 52100)

The workhorse. High-carbon chromium steel with about 1.0% carbon and 1.5% chromium, through-hardened to 60-64 HRC after quenching and tempering. It offers excellent hardness, wear resistance and rolling-fatigue life at moderate cost, which is why it dominates general-purpose ball and roller bearings.

Martensitic Stainless - 440C

440C carries more carbon (about 1.0%) for very high hardness (up to ~62 HRC) and good wear resistance, with moderate corrosion resistance. It is the usual choice when a stainless bearing must still survive abrasive duty, though it is less corrosion-resistant than precipitation-hardened grades.

Precipitation-Hardened Stainless - 17-4PH

17-4PH (roughly 15-17% chromium, 3-5% nickel, ~4% copper) hardens by ageing rather than high carbon. It sacrifices some peak hardness (about HRC 42-48) but gains markedly better corrosion resistance than 440C - especially in marine and chemical environments - plus good weldability. For food, pharmaceutical and offshore duty it is often the better trade-off.

Ceramics - ZrO2 and Si3N4

Zirconia (ZrO2) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) are used as balls or full components. They are non-magnetic, electrically insulating, extremely corrosion-resistant and lighter than steel, which cuts centrifugal stress at high speed. Si3N4 in particular offers 10-100x the rolling-contact fatigue life of steel in demanding applications.

How KMK Bearing Applies This

At KMK Bearing (SINO BEARINGS, KMK brand) these principles guide every order we manufacture in Chengdu, China. Our in-house process chain - forging, heat treatment, precision grinding, superfinishing and cleanroom assembly - is built to the standards described above, whether the part is a standard catalog bearing or a custom-engineered solution.

  • 20+ years of precision bearing manufacturing
  • Materials from chrome steel to 17-4PH stainless steel and full ceramic (ZrO2, Si3N4)
  • In-house heat treatment and metrology to P4/P2 (ABEC 7/9) precision
  • Custom designs and low-MOQ prototyping from drawings or samples
